Wilton Cake Decorating Course 1 Class 2

Today's class was the second class in course one, and it was completely different than what I thought it would be. We were asked to bring in a cake that was already frosted, and I assumed that we were going to make our own design. When we got there we were told that it was going to be a 'practice cake', and that we would be making a cake with a hot-air balloon on it in the next class. They will show us how to transfer a picture onto a cake and then we are going to fill it in.....cool, but I was hoping for the rainbow. I can do that on my own though once I learn how to do it!
Double Fudge Cake with Chocolate Pudding Filling and Cream Cheese Icing
Wilton Class Buttercream Icing, slightly tweaked. This is stiff stuff!
This is my practice cake, 3 roses, a heart made of stars, a large shell border, and on the side there are zig zags and ropes.
This shows the side detail a little better. First there is a zig zag pattern all the way up and down the sides and then the ropes are hung over them.

I'm rather proud of what I've done for my first cake decorating venture. Our teacher is terrific and I found out today that she helped write the class cake decorating books! I just thought that was awesome! She also told us that she used to make cakes for hire and had done it for 50 years and would be willing to tell us any tricks of the trade.....sounds like shortcuts and timesavers! Something that she told us that would save a huge mess was about the colors for our icing. She said rather than pull the entire protective aluminum top off, just poke a hole that you can put a toothpick through! Amazing!

I've learned so much in the past two weeks that I would like to continue going, however, money issues hold me back. I also learned today that they are going to be discontinuing the third cake decorating class after May's class because of lack of interest. Boooooo. That's the class where you learn the proper way to stack teired cakes, which would be handy to know if I were to become a decent enough cake decorator to make wedding cakes.

Anyway, thought I would share this with you! Haven't been on in a while because I've been busy with cakes since Sunday!! Still have some pictures to post from around the house.....need to do.....where are my post its?!?!

So I Start Class Tomorrow :)

I have officially signed up for Wilton Cake Decorating Course 1. I went tom Michaels on my lunch break and meandered around in the bakery and wedding aisle. I found a few things of interest. There was this wedding planner organizer - which is perfect for me since I love to organize - but the datebook in it was from 2009! The thing cost $40, but I think they could discount slightly for being outdated....he he. Just being a picky shopper which I know I shouldn't be. I also saw some really cute orange invitations but it was a set of 30 for $40. I'm not sure but I think I could probably get a computer program or find someone with one and make it for cheaper.

Anyway, to the point at hand. The first class is tomorrow night from 6:30 to 8:30 at Michaels. They told me that I do not have to bring my kit the first night just something to write on, which makes me believe we are making a list of what we need to make for the next class or three. I know that I have at least 2 good chocolate cake recipes but I haven't really done vanilla cake from scratch, I prefer chocolate. Cross your fingers we can choose so I can stick with what I know best!

So, pictures to follow when I have something to show off.

Once a Foodie, Always a Foodie

So I am posting this in hopes that it will get me to kickstart a blog that I've been putting off. This blog will be entirely devoted to cooking. Mostly baking as I'm wanting to become involved in it but I will also be posting other dishes I've been cooking that are new to me or a great old recipe. This is a quick post as I'm in the process of going to bed but was wanting to write this out before I pass out. Hopefully this will serve as a good reminder for me.

(This was the first time I made this cake -turned out great! Want the recipe? Just ask! It's Chocolate Peanut Butter Cake. Yummmm.)

Another idea for a blog that I had was a story blog. I've been wanting to write a book, some sort of fantasy, and I feel that it would be a good start in storytelling for me. You know, just start a post making it the beginning of the story and continue that story throughout the posts. I don't know. Just another one of my ramblings. :)

Heeeeeeeeeere's Kayla!

Well, it's been a while since I've been able to get on here. I used to get on during work (whoops.....lol) but since then I've moved from my job in Service to my job in Sales (taking pics of cars for eBay) I don't have quite as much time as I used to. Now I have to drag the ole' laptop to friends houses or places with wireless internet and take advantage when I can. Well, I haven't been able to take advantage for a while, lol.

Let me catch you up to all the happenings.

We, meaning my boyfriend and myself, bought a 40 inch LCD Toshiba Television at the beginning of December. I ended up putting a little over half on a Best Buy credit card (my first!) and we are paying it off (with no interest, pretty good deal!). Well, my boyfriends brother brought his Wii over and left it at our house for a long time. We played it quite a bit and normally put the wrist straps on our hands. Eli, me, and two of our friends were playing bowling - not even in the 6th frame - and when Eli goes to swing our friend Corey puts his feet out in front of Eli and he hits Corey foot and the WiiMote goes flying into our new TV. This happened about 3 weeks ago. I'll post pics as soon as I can. THAT was frustrating.

That happens shortly AFTER my doctor tells me to reduce the stress in my life as much as possible.

I have recently been diagnosed with something they are giving me pills for - I believe muscle relaxers - to help with the major pain in my left side. I keep the pills in a little cubby on a nightstand next to my side of the bed in their pill bottle. Just last week, not too long after I left for work, Eli went to the restroom and left Jada out with Koda (our boxer - J - and mix - K -). She's been known to tear some stuff up but nothing too bad....well, Eli comes out of the bathroom and Jada's sitting on our bed with my pill bottle next to her, dust on the bed, and no pills to be found. Eli had called me just as I got to my desk at work. Jada just ate some of your pills and I have no clue what they are, what do I do? OK, I had no idea at this point so I go home and on my way there I call her regular vet. They ask what the pills were and at this point I wasn't sure....so they said to make her throw up give her 1/4 cup of Peroxide and wait 15 minutes. If she hasn't thrown up by then, give her another 1/4 cup - but no more - and wait 15 more minutes. When I got to the house Eli's brother and his boyfriend were there and had already called the vet and had already given her the first dose. After 15 minutes she didn't throw up so we got ready to give her the second dose. Eli and myself held her upright, Zach held her mouth open, and Ian poured it in her mouth.......well, she ended up spitting it all out on all of our faces! It was so nasty. She ended up throwing up, but when it got to her mouth she would always eat it again, so we were getting nowhere. I called the vet and told them what it was and they said she'd be fine, just watch her and make sure she ate and if she started acting funny to call them. Poor thing was so tired the rest of the day........but she did good. The bad thing is now every night when I take my pills she rushes right up to me sniffing the air to see what I've got.....silly girl.

Right now I'm enthralled in Blogger while Zachs playing Rock Band 2 and Eli and Ian are watching races on another computer. I swear Eli's addicted. That's all he does when he gets on a computer. Eh, better than some other addictions though, right?

RANDOM THOUGHT: I just remembered the homemade cookies that I made the other day. It was from a recipe on the back of Nestle Chocolate Chip bag. I used Toll House Milk Chocolate Chunks though......yumm......they were oh......so.....good. They went way to fast. I like baking and I thought that stuff like that would last around my house since its just me and Eli.....but no. He claims he doesn't like sweets much but when I made those cookies (there were about 30 of them) I had a handful and they were gone in 5 days! I told him he needed to slow down. The cookies were still better than the pre made cookie dough you buy at stores. The only down side to that is the salmonella risk.....ha ha....thats why I buy the dough - to eat it!

I've been checking out online schools for interior design.....the only problem that I keep running into is that some of them aren't accredited.....What to do, what to do........I'm sure I'll blog about that later though.

I've run out of stuff to say for now......
